About WhichOneIsReal

WhichOneIsReal is an independent project that helps people learn to tell real photos, videos and writing apart from AI-generated fakes β€” by turning it into a game you can actually get better at.

Why we built this

In just a few years, image and video generators like Midjourney, DALLΒ·E, Google Imagen, Stable Diffusion, Sora, Kling and Runway went from producing obvious cartoons to creating pictures most people can no longer distinguish from a real camera shot. That shift is exciting β€” and it also makes it far easier to be misled by a fake portrait, a fabricated "news" photo, or a made-up quote.

We think the best defence isn't fear, it's practice. The more real-vs-AI examples you see side by side β€” and the more you learn why a particular image is fake β€” the sharper your instincts become. WhichOneIsReal exists to give you that practice in a way that's quick, fun, and genuinely educational.

How our quizzes are made

Every round pairs a genuine photograph or clip with one or more AI-generated alternatives of the same subject. The real media comes from licensed and public-domain sources; the fakes are produced with current-generation tools such as DALLΒ·E 3, Stable Diffusion, Google Imagen, Midjourney and leading video models. In several categories you can flip on "show model names" to see which system created each fake, so you can learn each model's tells.

We hand-review pairings so the challenge is fair β€” the goal is to test real perception, not to trick you with mislabelled or low-quality images.

Who's behind it

WhichOneIsReal is built and maintained by an independent developer based in Germany. It is a small, self-funded project β€” not backed by any AI company β€” which means the quizzes stay honest about what today's models can and can't do. Full provider details are in our Legal Notice.

How we keep the lights on

The site is free to play. We cover hosting costs through occasional advertising and affiliate links to AI tools we mention β€” if you buy through one of those links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes which image is the "real" one or how we describe a model's strengths and weaknesses.
